From ACS to ITE

Transformative Journey in ITE

Hello Reader,

I’d like to share the beginning of my tertiary academic journey, which started at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE). Transitioning from the Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) to ITE was a significant change, presenting both challenges and opportunities for growth.

Here’s an overview of my experience at ITE and the lessons I learned along the way.

Nitec in Chemical Process Technology

After completing my secondary education, I pursued NITEC in Chemical Process Technology at ITE College East. This course provided me with a solid foundation in chemical processes, preparing me for future endeavors in the field.

However, the transition from ACS to ITE was a daunting experience due to the completely different pace and environment. This forced me to take a step back and reframe my perspective and direction.

Details of my internship can be found here and here.

Roles and Responsibilities
Class Representative

From the second day of school, I was nominated to be the class representative. This role involved assisting the lecturer with marking attendance and coordinating various activities. It was an early opportunity to develop leadership and organizational skills.

Student Ambassador

I was also nominated to undergo a selection process to become a student ambassador. As a student ambassador, I represented the school during secondary school visits and registration periods when the public came to the campus, which gave me valuable exposure to public speaking and people management. This role significantly enhanced my communication skills and confidence.

Challenges Faced

Despite these opportunities, my time at ITE was not without its difficulties. I encountered challenging classmates who prevented me from enjoying a smooth and peaceful educational experience. Additionally, my lack of maturity at the time led to mistakes in raising concerns and managing expectations. These challenges, although tough, were integral to my growth.

Personal Growth and Learning

Overall, my experience at ITE was a massive learning curve. The challenges I faced taught me resilience and adaptability, while the roles I took on helped me develop essential skills that would benefit me in my future academic and professional endeavors.

The common perspective was that ITE students were disruptive, and would face difficulties in the corporate world. However, I believe that this is entirely dependent on the individual, as many more opportunities are offered to ITE students in terms of exposure and paths to continue studying.

To my juniors who learn at a slower pace: ITE is an amazing place to learn and grow as a person. Even if I was given a choice to turn back time, I would still choose this path. It was through the experiences and the exposure to so many things that carved out the path I am walking on.
