Hello Reader,
I’m excited to share my experience working with Curtin Consulting Group (CCG), where I had the dual roles of a consultant and the Director of Marketing. This opportunity allowed me to apply my academic knowledge in real-world scenarios, expose and enhance my consulting skills, and develop strategic marketing initiatives. Here’s an overview of my responsibilities and key achievements during my time with Curtin Consulting Group.
I chanced upon CCG during my orientation week on my semester exchange to Curtin University in Perth. The assessment center was nerve wrecking, being in an unfamiliar environment. However, it was evident that the assessments were structured well to understand the cognitive behaviors of potential consultants that would represent CCG to assist actual Non-Profit Organizations.
Consulting with WIRES Australia
One of the significant projects I worked on was with WIRES Australia, focusing on the Corporate Partnership Donation Re-evaluation Project. Here’s a breakdown of my role and responsibilities:
Business Analysis and Re-evaluation
Information Analysis: I analyzed the provided business information and identified key areas for re-evaluation. This involved understanding their current corporate partnerships and the effectiveness of their donation strategies.
Industry Understanding: To provide valuable insights, I gained a deeper understanding of WIRES Australia's industry and their future plans, particularly their goal to expand and increase their reach across Australia as part of their mission to save displaced wildlife animals.
Team Collaboration and Research
Teamwork: I collaborated with a team of six members and a Deloitte mentor. This teamwork was crucial in bringing diverse perspectives and expertise to the project. Each individual had their area of responsibility which would be briefed to the mentor to provide feedback based on the perspective of a consultant in a reputable firm.
Research and Brainstorming: We researched over 20 case studies, analyzed various scholarly articles, and brainstormed solutions. A significant focus was on incorporating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to enhance WIRES Australia's visibility and impact.
Marketing Recommendations
Social Media Marketing Plan: As part of our recommendations, I drafted a generic social media marketing plan aimed at increasing WIRES Australia's visibility. This plan included strategies for content creation, audience engagement, and leveraging social media platforms effectively.
There were multiple tasks which support was sought. Despite the agreed solution we would work on, I felt that the marketing aspect was a vital factor in positioning the organization in a different light to enhance our strategy. Seeking the project manager's disposition, I proceeded to propose a generic guide for reference.
Achievements
Consultant of the Semester: My efforts and contributions to the project were recognized, and I was awarded the title of Consultant of the Semester. This acknowledgment was a testament to the hard work and dedication I put into the consulting project.
Director of Marketing Role
In addition to my consulting responsibilities, I served as the Director of Marketing for Curtin Consulting Group. Here’s an overview of my role:
Marketing Strategy Development
Strategic Planning: As the role was a transitioning role and time was required to lay the foundation, I worked with interested and potential consultants to develop a marketing plan that would enhance the visibility and reputation of Curtin Consulting Group. This involved understanding our target audience and creating tailored marketing campaigns.
Key Highlights
Consulting Excellence: Successfully re-evaluated WIRES Australia's corporate partnership donation strategies, providing valuable insights and recommendations.
Research and Collaboration: Effectively collaborated with a team and mentor, conducting extensive research and brainstorming innovative solutions.
Marketing Leadership: Developed and implemented strategic marketing plans that would go on to enhance the visibility and reputation of Curtin Consulting Group.
Recognition: Awarded Consultant of the Semester for outstanding contributions to the consulting project.
Challenges Faced
In-depth Research: Conducting extensive research and analyzing numerous case studies and scholarly articles was demanding but essential for providing well-informed recommendations.
Time Management: I had overloaded my trimester with a total of 5 modules. A CCG project by itself is said to be a module worth. As such, it was an initial struggle to manage my time in terms of academic work and deliverables for this project along with team meetings (occasionally at the Deloitte office)
Reflection and Takeaways
My experience with Curtin Consulting Group was incredibly enriching, providing valuable insights into the consulting and marketing fields. From re-evaluating business strategies for WIRES Australia to proposing marketing initiatives, each task contributed to my professional growth. The recognition I received as Consultant of the Semester was a highlight, reinforcing the impact of my contributions.
It was an unfortunate situation where I had to return to Singapore to continue my studies, and was unable to join the team for pitch night. Nonetheless, we organized a separate session to share the learnings and proposed solutions with WIRES at a later date.
I had the intention to bring this initiative to Singapore. However, due to the student demographics and fast-paced culture, it proved to be a difficult implementation.
Hopefully, I will be able to review this initiative when I am in a better position, thereby exposing these insightful learnings to interested students.
I hope this insight into my experience with Curtin Consulting Group provides valuable perspectives on the practical aspects of consulting and marketing. Stay tuned for more stories and experiences from my journey.
