My exchange experience
Hello Reader,
My exchange journey at Curtin University in Western Australia was a defining chapter in my academic and personal life. I would like to share my highlights and lessons from my time at Curtin University, offering insights for prospective students, appreciation for current students, and nostalgic reflections for alumni.
Embarking on a New Journey
To gain a better exposure to university life and a more enriching experience at the main campus, I opted for an exchange at Curtin University in Western Australia. This marked the first time I traveled overseas alone, tasked with settling down and navigating daily activities in a new environment. The journey was both challenging and rewarding, as I familiarized myself with the way of life there.
Academic Pursuits and Involvement
To maximize my exposure, I enrolled in five modules and joined Curtin Consulting Group (CCG). Through an assessment center, I was selected as a consultant and the Director of Marketing. My experience with CCG involved working in a team to review the corporate partnership donation structure. We juggled school and extracurricular activities while researching industry practices and framing our proposed solution professionally, with guidance from a Deloitte consultant who served as our mentor. After 12 weeks, we presented our findings and proposed solutions to the client, who acknowledged our efforts.
Classroom Dynamics
Academically, I enjoyed the dynamic interactions and sharing of learnings from both lecturers and students. Discussing topics and building on them through shared experiences, thoughts, and feelings allowed me to think more critically and gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
Overcoming Cultural Differences
Initially, I struggled with managing expectations due to cultural differences. Team members sometimes prioritized football matches or part-time jobs over meetings. However, I quickly adapted by understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the team, concerns they might have had, planning meetings ahead of schedule, and communicating frequently. This approach made team members feel valued and ultimately improved the quality of our work.
Exploring Western Australia
In my free time, I explored my surroundings. I arrived two weeks before the semester to settle down and take a trip up north to Exmouth, where I experienced scuba diving at amazing sites, including under a navy pier. During the semester, friends visited, and we ventured to the canola fields, sand dunes, and scenic sights. During a mid-semester break, I invited a friend to join me on a journey to Margaret River. We visited Sugarloaf Rock, multiple wineries, and enjoyed fantastic bakery and restaurant experiences. These adventures were etched in our memories.
Reflecting on My Experience
The exchange experience at Curtin University was both interesting and enriching. While focused on academics and cultural immersion, I also took the time to explore Western Australia. These experiences made me appreciate my environment better and allowed me to form lifelong friendships. I look forward to being exposed to a wider range of cultures with more international experiences in the future.
Conclusion
The exchange at Curtin University provided invaluable exposure to diverse cultures and enriched my academic journey. From navigating cultural differences to exploring the beautiful landscapes of Western Australia, every moment contributed to my personal and professional growth. I am grateful for this opportunity and excited about future international exposures that will further broaden my horizons.
